Kaweco Liliput Brass Pen Review

Kaweco Liliput Brass Pen

The Kaweco Pen Co. is a company founded in 1883, originally based in Heidelberg, Germany.  During World War I, the company started producing its own gold nibs, to stop dependence on importing American parts. By 1929, it became one of the first German manufacturers to employ injection molding. Despite some turmoil in the later 20th century, the company is still present and that strength purveys through the products. One of those sturdy products is the Kaweco Liliput Brass Fountain Pen.

For a compact and rugged pen, with a smooth writing experience for everyday use, the Kaweco Liliput Brass is a fantastic choice. The brass body is tough, yet sleek with an understated elegance. The pen gives off a much more delicate and expensive look. It is approximately 3.5 inches with the cap twisted on.  At around 5 inches posted, it has an almost perfect balance in the hand. The pen is great for smaller and medium sized hands, as its thin and petite body rests comfortably in the hand when writing.  Wonderful for on the go, the threaded nature allows it to both be screwed on tight to prevent leaking and posted with twist-on threading to keep the cap on securely.

As a writer the Kaweco Liliput Brass is surprisingly smooth with an excellent flow. The steel nib performs impressively with its smoothness. Strokes and curves written in different directions are not a problem and scratchiness is almost a nonfactor. Flow is exceptional for this small device! It truly makes the writer want to go on and on. This can be attributed to the high quality feed. The pen takes standard international cartridges. The only drawback is that the converter is sold separately and many users suggest syringe filling a cartridge as the better option.

If you are looking for an everyday writer, which is both durable and dependable, the Kaweco Liliput Brass Fountain Pen is a great choice! Classy enough to pull out at an evening out or tough enough for everyday use on the go, the writing experience is one to write home about.

Montegrappa Steampunk Grappa

A stunning writing instrument that looks like it just jumped out of a steampunk novel directly into your hand. Sparking ideas of the two worlds colliding, igniting the imagination!

This cult collection turned out to be a break-through phenomenon in the industry.

Innovative for its steampunk design and local-roots idea, it is already setting up a trend on the market.

The Grappa collection will be offered as a fountain or a rollerball pen, limited to the Montegrappa’s foundation year-number 1912 for each of the two modes.

The Grappa fountain pen is fit traditionally with a customized 18k gold nib, and is both cartridge or converter-fed.

Sailor Storia Bottled Ink

Sailor Storia
At first glance the ink boxes on the new Japanese Sailor Storia ink bottles appear to be primary colors with whimsical circus related characters. The words: Dancer, Lion, Spotlight, Clown and Balloon are just some of these designations. The round cardboard housing with the bright colored labels I found reminiscent of my childhood Play-Doh modeling clay. The bottles are opaquely frosted and gives the effect of something precious inside.

After testing each shade the nano-particle ink leans more towards pastel shades as opposed to bold primary colors. This water-resistant ink lays wonderfully on the paper with a consistent wash effect even when used with a fine nibbed pen. The Lion light brown color is the boldest of the colors lending itself to the possibly of an everyday writing ink that makes a strong statement.

I recommend this new ink, especially to those youngsters ones who are seeking an entry level door into the world of fountain pens. The opportunity to revisit the joy of the childhood circus through these wonderfully named and packaged inks, is attractive to children of all ages.

Pen Review For Faber-Castell Ambition Pearwood by Babak

Faber-Castell Ambition Pearwood
The Faber Castell brand is known for making art supplies and instruments. However, they are also noteworthy in producing fine fountain pens. The Ambition Pearwood is no exception. The great German craftsmanship comes through with a beautiful pearwood body and solid chrome cap. The pen has a traditional flair, while being fit for any contemporary writer.

The body of the Ambition Pearwood is a traditional piece of art, combining the natural wood and the steel ascents. The pearwood has a soft and smooth finish. The pen has a good length to it and is of medium thickness. The color is a rich and vibrant mix of reddish and brown wood. The pen itself is surprisingly light when not posted.  When posted the cap snaps on tight and secure. The posted pen almost transforms, as it is now a substantial medium weight and over an inch longer than it already is. Still, it is not top heavy and comfortable in the hand. When gripping the pen, the fingers tend to be more steady on the pearwood, rather than the small amount of chrome ascent before the nib.

The Ambition Pearwood is a very dependable pen, with a durable yet smooth steel nib. For example, the broad nib has an almost marker like thickness. This is extra level of thickness is to be expected for a German nib. It writes exceptionally smooth for a steel nib, with the ink flowing effortlessly. There is very little drag or resistance when the nib touches the paper. The pen is available in fine and medium for those weary of that broad German nib. It comes with a Standard International converter for convenience and can also take the Standard International cartridges.

A great daily user for those looking for a natural appeal, the Ambition Pearwood Fountain Pen is solid piece of craftsmanship for under $150. The German precision is evident on the steel nib and chrome accents, while the smooth and eye catching pearwood looks and feels comfortable.

In honor of Left Handers Day – August 13th

In honor of Left Handers Day
Here are some interesting facts about people who have a dominant left hand. Left-handed people make up about 10-12% of the population, but they live in a right handed world. Most gadgets, office supplies, cooking supplies, and various other objects are catered for the right handed population which must be frustrating to say the least.

Tom Cruise, Whoopi Goldberg, Paul McCartney, Oprah Winfrey, Justin Bieber, Celine Dion, Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie all have dominant left hands. Many deceased celebrities, like Marilyn Monroe, Kurt Cobain, and Jimi Hendrix were left-handed as well. Maybe being left handed is the secret to stardom!

Recently St. Lawrence University conducted IQ tests among right and left handed people. The tests results concluded that there were more left handed people with IQs over 140 than those individuals with dominant right hands. To prove it, Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, Benjamin Franklin, and Isaac Newton were lefties!

Research has shown that left handed people are typically more artistically inclined. There is evidence that lefties are better at divergent thinking, and a survey of over 2,000 left handed people showed that the majority of lefties were drawn to careers in art and music.

With that being said, Lamy makes a left-handed nib that will fit most of their fountain pens. Some of the lines that will house these nibs are Safari, Al-star, CP1, Studio, Accent, Scala, Logos, as well as others. The nibs are available in silver or black stainless steel. Allowing a left-handed person to exercise their artistic or general writing needs without having to worry about the right handed world!

Perfect Writing Instruments for Kids

I was looking for a fun pen for my kids (6 and 9) to use and learn cursive with.  I decided to go with the Pelikan Pelikano and Pelikano Junior.  They really are perfect for kids, or anyone just starting with fountain pens.  They both are available in Right or Left Handed A (starter) nibs.  The Pelikano also offers a Fine or Medium version.  I like the ease of getting the pen ready to write - just a quick push and the ink cartridge popped right in.

Pelikan Pelikano

The colors are great as well - the Pelikano is available in Green, Yellow, Red or Blue and the Junior version is Turquoise, Violet and Red.

Pelikano Junior
The kids finally chose the Pelikano Junior since the ink cartridge was pirate-themed.  It's a shame that the ink cartridges are not available with different themes here in the US.  My daughter picked out the Turquoise, Violet and Pink ink cartridges and my son went for the Green, Red and Blue.

They also thought it was cool that they could put their names on the pen with an enclosed sticky white label.

I found the pens to be easy to hold and the grip section comfortable in my hands.  I was not expecting a smooth nib for the type of pen or price, but was pleasantly surprised.  The ink flow was perfect and did not clump or flow out excessively.

Now I can't wait to get home and help them learn a new way of writing.

Napkin Forever Desk Set - Pininfarina Cambiano

When I heard that Napkin® had a pencil-like writing instrument that never needed to be sharpened, the first thing that popped into my head was “Napkin makes pens?”  The second thing that popped into my head was “That sounds like the Jac Zagoory Beta Pen…  Napkin makes pens?”  The ubiquitous name “Napkin” conjures associations the same way “Kleenex” does – or, in this case, the way “Pininfarina” associates with luxury car design.  Bring together designers from these two Italian companies to create a never-ending writing instrument, and the Napkin Forever Pininfarina Cambiano Desk Set emerges.

At first glance, you can see the Pininfarina influence in the sweeping design of the metal on the body of the instrument – I hesitate to call it a pencil or a pen, as neither description truly fits.  Napkin has incorporated the same writing tip as it has on its other Forever pieces - Ethergraf®.  Ethergraf® is a special metal alloy that creates a mark on paper via oxidation.  The line looks like a pencil mark, but because it is interacting with the paper rather than leaving material on the surface like a pencil does, it isn’t erasable.  I did notice that the darkness of the line varied depending on the type of paper, so that is something to consider if you prefer darker lines.  The rest of the body is made of aluminum and walnut, with the metal portion available in either a Matte Black (more of a grey on my example) or Copper color.  The piece feels a little rear heavy, though when actually writing the weight distribution doesn’t hinder the user.  What I really like is the pen holder/desk stand/protective case.  Made of walnut, like the body of the pen, it allows you to either have the pen standing at an angle, laying flat across the top, or protected inside (this is how the pen arrives).  This box is actually functional and won't be just taking up space in a drawer or closet, a nice variation from the norm.

As for the actual writing experience – this is an interesting piece.  On some types of paper, I noticed an almost “stickiness” when lifting it off of the page.  This only occurred after I had written something and was very deliberate in lifting the instrument off the page, but did not appear if I touched it to paper or wrote as I normally would.  Perhaps this is a side effect of the alloy’s interaction with the paper?  The weight felt good in the hand despite its relative unevenness, and the shape was very ergonomic.  The instrument was relatively smooth across the page, though not as smooth as an HB pencil I happened to have on my desk.  This set is a statement - automotive design meshing with innovative creativity - rather than something to replace your favorite pen or pencil.

Standing in its holder, the pen has a somewhat retro look due to the materials used, and the Pininfarina influenced lines make it look like it’s going 100 MPH.  The desk stand is a fantastic touch and something I think, other than never needing to purchase another pencil or sharpener (or eraser), really adds to the value.  If you're looking for a stylish writing instrument which melds Italian automobile flair with modern metallurgy, the Napkin Forever Pininfarina Cambiano Desk Set is a fine choice.

The Writer's Corner -The Healing Power of Writing

Putting pen to paper can be a cathartic experience, especially for authors.

While going through a particularly difficult time in her life with a recent divorce and a new child, author J. K. Rowling suffered a debilitating depression.I just thought I want to write, so I wrote the book. What was the worst that could happen? It could get turned down by every publisher in Britain. Big deal.”

Political journalist and psychotherapist Laurie Nadel, PhD suffered from the burden of anxiety. Nadel found a way to ease her mind in volatile surroundings. She focused by writing for herself. "I thought that if I could write everything down, I could stay safe."

In the highly acclaimed book “The Artist’s Way” writer Julia Cameron states “Writing is medicine. It is an appropriate antidote to injury. It is an appropriate companion for any difficult situation.”

Even the most inexperienced writer can benefit by putting pen to paper. As long as your intention is to communicate with others or simply open up yourself, the form your musings take will be rewarding. So start that journal, write a letter, craft a poem, share an observation or start the next great American novel. The act of writing will take you on a journey that will enrich your life and quite possibly the lives of others.

Faber Castell E-Motion Fountain Pen Review

Faber-Castell E-Motion Pure Black Fountain Pen
Faber-Castell E-Motion Pure Black Fountain Pen
The e-motion has long been one of the most popular Faber-Castell lines available.  It has mainly been built with a wood or precious resin body and metal front section, cap and rear section.  Faber-Castell’s latest iteration is a whole metal affair – the Pure Black edition.  This is a modern looking, minimalist designed writing instrument. The body is made of an anodized aluminum with a guilloche pattern engraved on it, which offers a tactile feel and grip without being too rough.  The front section, cap and end piece are chrome plated and then finished in matte black.  The fountain pen’s nib is stainless steel coated in PVD, and is available in Fine, Medium or Broad. Faber-Castell also offers this line in Rollerball, Ballpoint or Mechanical Pencil.  The fountain pen uses international size cartridges and a converter is included.
While a bit shorter than most other pens, the tapered cylindrical shape allows the e-motion to fill the hand.  The all metal construction leads to a weighty pen – 1.9 oz as measured on our postal scale.  The cap is .7 oz and the body is 1.2 oz.  While somewhat shorter in stature than most pens, the Pure Black does not feel inconsequential. Posted, the length is just right and I found the shorter body and heavy cap to create an overall well balanced writing experience – the combination of the smoothness of the nib and the weight of the pen made writing with the e-motion very enjoyable.  I like the feel of the guilloche pattern on the body, and the front section is of a good diameter as well.  The nib is removable, making cleaning a breeze.  If I had to choose one issue, it would be that the guilloche pattern traps dust and lint very easily, and the black color makes this easy to see.  However, a quick wipe with a cloth and it goes back to looking brand new.  Something that I really like about the finish on this piece is that it will not readily show fingerprints, unlike chrome plated pens.
The Faber-Castell e-motion Pure Black fountain pen is by far one of my favorites – It is understated, yet catches your eye; it is shorter, yet has a surprisingly nice weight; it is easy to clean, easy to write with, and should be on everyone’s must-try list.

Lamy Wild Rubin (ruby) Studio Pens

Lamy Wild Rubin Studio Pens
Lamy Wild Rubin Studio Pens
The Lamy Wild Rubin (ruby) Studio pens have finally arrived!  The pictures I first saw of the Wild Rubin reminded me of the Lamy Royal Red color.  Boy, was I wrong.  The true color of the Wild Rubin does not come through in the pictures.  The Ruby color is shimmery and bright, not a matte color at all.
The Wild Rubin has a stainless steel barrel and polished chrome accents.  It has the iconic propeller clip.  The fountain pen and rollerball are the same style as previous colors, but the ballpoint is now tapered and has a longer front section.  The finish is smooth and lacquered, not the usual satin metal finish.
The fountain pen is available with a stainless steel nib or a 14k nib, both pens come with a converter and ink cartridge to start writing right away.  The 14k fountain pen arrives in a gift box with a bottle of blue ink.
All in all - these are beautiful pens and a great addition to any pen lovers collection.

Waterman Expert Pen Review

If you are looking for a fountain pen that is an example of simple elegance and masculine grace, the Waterman Expert is an ideal option at an affordable price.

The Waterman Expert has a simple, classic design that is sophisticated by small details. The body is made of a rich black high quality lacquer and has a rounded cigar shape.  The cap has a sleek design with a stylish slanted head and reliable steel clip, with the Waterman logo. The cap also snaps securely when posted. The body has a light to medium weight and when posted has a medium that is substantial without feeling top heavy. The grip is slightly thinner than the rest of the body and shaped to give one’s fingers a firm hold, while the pen rests gently in one’s hand.

The writing experience of the Waterman Expert is a pleasure at a fair price. The pen has a very smooth nib for a steel piece. With the medium nib, some light pressure is needed to get started, yet once it does it flows evenly and with little effort. The gold quality performance is rarely scratchy. Writing curves is exceptionally smooth and easy, while lines take a slight amount of effort.  The pen has the option of taking Waterman cartridges or a Waterman converter.

Made in France, the Waterman Expert is a wonderful choice whether as a gift for any holiday or a gift to oneself as a dependable but smooth everyday writer.

Caran d"Ache 849 Ballpoint Pen

I have had a Caran d"Ache 849 Ballpoint pen for over a year and it has never let me down. The hexagonal shape, the unique click forwarding device, the finely engineered push button mechanism and its compact, but not too small, pen size makes this one of my favorite pens that is always ready to go. In fact, I liked it so much that when my nephew started college I gave him one as a gift. I enjoy color options with my ink refills. Monterverde Parker Style gel refills fit snuggly in this pen. This allows me some of my favorite options with Turquoise, Blue/Black and Purple readily available.

The Caran d'Ache 849 Ballpoint pen now comes in a Goldbar design. It is coated in a gold-toned satin finish barrel and its fittings are plated with sparkling gold that easily pick-up the light. The outer box is almost as impressive, being made of the very same materials and resembling a gold bar. The box also sports a handy magnetic closing, so you can be assured that your writing instrument is secure. This beauty also has a gold plated clip which adds to its overall effect. No I do not NEED a new Caran d'Ache pen, but the ownership of this one is so inviting. I already know of the brand's reliability, so there is no trepidation in purchasing another. The time maybe now to treat myself to a gift!

Filofax Spring Organizers

It feels like spring time here - temperatures are in the 50s and rainy.  Along with the spring-like weather, comes the new Filofax Spring organizers.  There are so many new colors and styles to choose from.

The Filofax Patent series features a high gloss patent finish with a matching color pen loop.  There are the eye-pleasing colors: Lavender, Lemon and Duck Egg.  It comes with the standard Filofax inserts: 2015 calendar/diary, #1-6 index, To do list, Contacts, Ruler/page marker and assorted notepapers.  There is a space in the front cover for cards and a pocket in the back for a notepad.  These are available in the Pocket and Personal sizes only.  My favorite is the Lemon color - a nice sunshine yellow for a rainy day.

The Daises organizers put a smile on my face since they are my favorite flower.  It has a soft touch cotton twill canvas cover, with a field of daises all around.  This is available in the pocket or personal size. The personal size has 6 card slots in the front and space for a notepad in the back.  I did need to purchase the To do refill for it since it does not arrive with that.  I would be lost without my to do list!
The Domino Patent series has a new design - spots.  The Pine and Aubergine organizers have spots on them.  Yes - I had to look up the word Aubergine - it is a British word for eggplant.  The organizer looks more of a dark fuchsia/purple with pink spots than a typical eggplant color (at least to me).  The Domino Patent also has the ever popular Fluorescent Pink and Turquoise colors.  Only the Pink color is available in the pocket, personal and A5 size, the rest are available in personal and A5 only.

The Saffiano series returns with Pear and Aquamarine, available in Pocket, Compact, Personal and A5.  The Pear is a very bright yellow green color and the Aquamarine a nice deep blue green. The Pear compact is the perfect gift for my teenage cousin.  She will always be able to find it in her bag.
And last, but certainly not least - a Filofax for my dad.  He loves his Nappa personal size zipped organizer.  He is the envy of his Florida neighborhood. The rich leather colors of Black and Taupe together are quite handsome. These are available in personal and A5 size, zipped or without. There is a pocket on the front cover and a zipped pocket on the back, which is perfect for a little extra cash or a cellphone.

Remember that we have most of these items in stock now and more coming each week.  Just wish the rain would stop for a bit and let the sunshine through so I can start on my flower garden.
