While the nibs of the series are steel, they are extremely smooth and have minimal drag. Down strokes were found to be especially smooth. There are many ways we find to express ourselves. In this fast paced technology world there is an abundance of ways to do so. Many well-known authors from the past and present prefer the feel of a fine writing instrument in their hand while composing.

Starting with his 1994 novel “Stardust” fantasy author Neil Gaiiman first used a Waterman pen with a large notepad. He enjoyed creating with a fountain pen. He now utilizes over 60 different pens which include, Visconti, Pilot Custom 823 Amber and Delta. Dylan Thomas preferred the popular Parker 51 fountain pen with its fast-drying ink. A comparable Parker pen today is the Parker 100 series. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the mastermind behind sleuth Sherlock Holmes, composed many of his works with a Parker Duofold pen. According to husband Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath constructed her writings using a Sheaffer pen.

My Top 10 Favorites

At Pen Boutique I have seen it all when it comes to pen. I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly, and while it is easy to pick out the rotten of the lot, it is never easy to pick out a favorite. Well, the list of good pens does run longer than the list of bad. But even if it were otherwise, the task of picking out the top 10 favorite pens would have been tough. At least it is for me, because I have always felt that my decision would hurt “the feelings” (of course, I know things don’t have emotions and NO, I am not crazy) of those which I don’t pick. So, whether it is a movie, a book, a shoe from my wardrobe or food, I can never decide my favorite. Yet, despite the agonies, just for you dear readers I have churned out a list of my top 10 favorite pens ever. So hold your breath and live this moment; I don’t do this very often.

In no particular order (for the fear of getting a stroke), here is my list of 10 favorite pens.

1. Namiki VP Carbon Fiber (M)

A fountain pen that is retractable – need I say more. And it is beautiful. Namiki Vanishing Point pen in carbon fiber finishing is a stunning example of art meeting architecture. I love the smart designing that has been put into the pen and it is a unique model that is worth investing in. And if design and structure wasn’t enough to get it scoring, the 18k gold nib fitted in the Vanishing Point is butter smooth. I have a medium nib in use and it is faultless. No wonder, it is in my list of favorite pens.

2. Visconti Demo Fountain Pen(F)

I have always had a great liking for transparent things, like the clear raincoat and umbrella. There is just something reassuring and comforting about being able to see what is going on behind the scenes. I have similar emotions for the Visconti Demonstrator. And while there are other transparent pens, what makes Visconti Demo stand out is that the clear barrel works double as an ink reservoir. A piston knob is at the end of the barrel for ink filling purpose. The pen is of a nice weight and the SmarTouch nib from Visconti gives a smooth performance on paper. It looks fantastic and writes well; what else does it take for a pen to be counted worthy for a “favorite list”.

3. Montegrappa Nero Uno Linea Rollerball Pen

Montegrappa Nero Uno Linea Rollerball pen stole my heart with its unpretentious style. While the traditional octagonal shape of the brand has been retained, it has been given a contemporary twist of conical alignment and grid patterns on the barrel and the cap. Made of deep, black resin, the pen feels great on hand, which encourages me to pick it up every time I write.

4. Waterman Carene Amber Shimmer Fountain Pen (M)

I share a fair amount of affinity for Waterman Carene Amber Shimmer fountain pen, because while it boasts a rather professional look, the lacquer work on it exudes of mischief and fun. There is something about it that is secretive and playful which is very appealing to me. I love the gold trims and the 18k gold nib which doesn’t fail when demanded of. And it has a comfortable weight when writing which is a bonus point to its already super fantastic performance.

5. Monteverde Artista Crystal Transparent Medium Demo

This just goes to show my aforementioned emotions towards transparent demo pens. And it comes in fun color options. Made of high quality acrylic resin, Monteverde Artista Crystal Transparent Medium Demo pen is light weight and writes decent with the iridium stainless steel nib. It easily fits the slot of an everyday pen and is super cool at being that.

6. Monteverde Impressa Fountain Pen (M)

I am fond of good pens, but I am fonder of good pens that come at surprisingly reasonable price. Speak of a pen that looks like $100 but costs $50 and you don’t have to look further than the Monteverde Impressa Fountain pen. With no engraving or embellishment of any kind on the entire body, the pen is the definition of “beauty in simplicity”. Coated in lacquer and highly polished, the fountain pen is presentable and writes very well too.

7. Monteverde Catalina Fountain Pen (M)

The resin body comes in three color choices and each one is reminiscent of the island the pen is named after. Just looking at the pen is enough to have you dreaming of warm, wet sand and cool, salty breeze of the sea. But what helps it make it to my favorite list is its deceptive size. The pen boasts a rich thickness but when held to write, it doesn’t have the heft you would expect. Pair this with a nice ink and you would add this to your everyday pen list.

8. Lamy AL-Star Fountain Pen (F,M,B,1.1)

Inspired by the Safari series of Lamy, the Al-Star fountain pen has inherited a lot of likeness to Safari, but has a sturdier aluminum body. It is the reason why the Al-Star is my preferred Lamy. Plus, while it is stocked with comfort, durability and rich color choices, it is not expensive. Add to that the interchangeable nib feature of Lamy and it scores another brownie point.

9. Fisher Space Pen Purple Passion Bullet Ballpoint Pen

First of all, I love the bright, succulent purple hue on the pen. It is just very attractive. Now, getting to why the Fisher Space Pen Purple Passion Bullet Ballpoint Pen is my top 10 favorite pen – it is a great pocket pen and it never fails to perform. It would top the list of an everyday pen for sure.

10. Fisher Space Infinium Titanium Nitride Ballpoint Pen

There was no way it was not going to be in this list for the simple reason that it will never run out of ink as long as I live. It seems to go on forever. And it has killer, tough looks and feels very comfortable when writing.

Visconti Impressionist Van Gogh 2011 Collection.

Believe what you will about his reputation, but there is no one in the world that can say Vincent van Gogh is not one of the most influential artists the world has ever seen. Despite his complicated personal life, continuous bouts of mental illness and that dreadful ear incident everyone is familiar with, van Gogh’s artworks have become world-renowned for their rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colors that are just as captivating as they are striking. In fact, these are the very feelings Visconti wishes to convey in their newest Van Gogh Impressionist collection. The original collection enjoyed more than ten years of success worldwide before being discontinued in 2008. Three years later, Visconti’s innovation of their original idea has turned the collection into something unusually beautiful. Instead of dedicating the series to the overall magnificence of van Gogh, each writing utensil will be inspired by not only his heritage, skill and technique, but by the emotion and personality of each individual painting. Visconti has honored each of his most famous works, from Sunflowers to Room in Arles in a collection that is sure to enthrall any art-lover – and anyone who simply appreciates finely crafted work.

The gift boxes themselves are unique treasures of ingenuity that can be appreciated all on their own. They are made of smooth, dark brown leather, and shaped like an elongated triangle with the Visconti symbol imprinted on the cover. When opened, the inside is reminiscent of a picture book. On the right is a picture of the dedicated painting and on the left, in all its majesty, is the writing utensil with a collection booklet tucked underneath.

Now it’s time for the fun part: the designs. Let us begin with Sunflowers. A still life painted in 1888, the painting utilizes a very unique range of yellows, browns and greens. The yellows, traditionally meant to be bright, are muted to more somber shades, while van Gogh manages to make the browns come alive and steal the show. The pen’s barrel and cap are commendably-crafted works of art that artfully combine Sunflowers complicated palette of colors into a surprisingly beautiful collage. (Think about it, the very thought of meshing yellow, gold, brown and green together just sounds ugly, but hey, that’s Visconti for you. They make daisies into diamonds!) The top of the cap is nondescript and simply boasts the Visconti logo on a slightly raised silver background. The pen’s ring is thick, and like every other member of the collection, has the title of the tributary painting engraved in all capital letters, as if it would ever be possible for you to forget.
 

The second addition to the collection is based on Room in Arles. (Don’t even think about asking me where that is. Narnia, I imagine.) This one must have been particularly difficult to design, since nearly every color in the entire spectrum had to be included. Van Gogh’s use of blue, brown, red, yellow, orange, black (And once again, I repeat, doesn’t that just sound ugly?) brings to life the smoothness of polished wood, the coolness of the blue walls, and the homey feeling of a lived-in room, a feat he accomplishes quite nicely. The colors are arranged in a swirling pattern that allows them to flow together instead of crashing and creating a jarring image.


Last but most certainly not least, is the dedication to the painting Starry Night. (Thankfully, possible color clashes with this palette are not as alarming as the others.) Browns, blacks, whites, blues and yellows, each a color of the night lay over one another with a familiarity that comes from centuries of being blended together. This one is my absolute favorite. The blues give off a cool mystique while the striking yellows and browns lend it an air of sophistication. The finished result is a pen that is the embodiment of power carefully shrouded in elegance.
 

From these three designs alone, this series has the class, character and craftsmanship to be a completed masterpiece, but Visconti does not stop there. Far from done, they have planned to add dedications to A Pair of Shoes, Iris, Self Portrait With Hat and others to this already impressive repertoire of designs. It will be a while before they’re released, but the original three have enough specs and appeal to keep us entertained until that day comes.
The series is available as ballpoint, rollerball and fountain pens, but the hidden treasure to look for is the eco-roller. It has the same traditional tip as a rollerball pen, but it fills by an ink cartridge. Rollerball pens have a permanent cartridge that must be thrown out, nib and all, when the ink runs out. Instead of having all of this excess, unnecessary waste, the much more economical eco-roller only requires the abandonment of a small plastic cartridge. (That, and the whole design makes everything much, much more convenient, and I’m all about convenience.)
 

 
Brilliance inspires brilliance, creativity inspires creativity and innovation inspires innovation. Vincent van Gogh, a leader in all these qualities, has been paid homage to by a much more recent master in a tribute that will forever set a new standard. Visconti has risen above their peers in terms of ingenuity and dedication and presented to the world a collection that they, and most importantly, van Gogh, can be proud of.

The Visconti Rembrandt has become a staple of the Italian pen maker’s line.  It is priced well, attractive and handles beautifully.  The body and cap are constructed of a variegated resin, which gives it a look reminiscent of chiaroscuro (hence the Rembrandt moniker).  This pattern of light and dark varies between each pen, meaning that any single piece will differ from the rest with its own unique look.  Visconti has taken a different approach to the Rembrandt line by utilizing a magnet inside of the cap to keep a secure hold onto the body of the pen while not in use.  This alleviates any chance of damage to the pen through cross-threading.  The cap posts onto the back of the body via friction.  The stainless steel nib resides within a metal front section which provides a nice color contrast as well as some weight to the body of the pen. There is not a dramatic step-down in size between the body of the pen and the front section, which along with the lack of threads provides for a very comfortable experience while writing.  International size cartridges are used and a converter is included.

The Rembrandt is without a doubt a smooth writer.  I do find that it balances better when the cap is posted, as the magnet in the cap adds weight to the rear.  The use of international size cartridges is a huge plus as it opens your ink selection to a wide variety of brands and colors and especially if you do not want to use the converter for any reason (travel, etc.).  The fact that the nib can be easily removed from the front section is a boon to a thorough cleaning and something which I have come to appreciate when cleaning pieces we have demoed for customers.  The size of the Rembrandt is just right – not so large as to be an encumbrance, but not so small as to lead to cramps while writing for long periods.  This is obviously a personal preference, but I have found this series to be a good fit for most.

Visconti–Declaration of Independence 1776 Pen

Couple of the most aggressive brand to bring in new products this year is Waterman and Visconti. While Waterman brings elegance, Visconti brings creativity to the table.
Visconti has come up with this splendid idea of making a pen based on the Declaration of Independence .Visconti Declaration of Independence limited edition pen may be one of the finest creation by the Visconti Pen owner - Dante.


The unique feature about this pen is that Visconti has used their scrimshaw technique to embed the text of the declaration of independence into the barrel of the pen. The pen also comes with a magnifying glass to see and enjoy the intricate features of the pen.I don’t know how they could fit in so much words into it but its really amazing how they did that.

This pen will be officially inaugurated today in the Philadephia Pen Show ( Jan 21st to Jan 23rd) and the state mayor himself along with the owner of Visconti would be there for the opening ceremony.
The pen and magnifying glass are packaged together with a scroll in a special collector's edition box made from American walnut wood. The top of the box is made from leather and is engraved with the names of the signatories from the historic act.

The most interesting part about the pen is the Fountain Pen’s plunger filler. It is shaped based on the Liberty Bell and the representation of the bell is so detailed that it also has the crack that can be seen on the original bel. The nib of the pen is made with palladium ( not gold) and in the last one year we have seen some raving positive comments on this new element for nib.

The Visconti Declaration of Independence Pen also has the important event in US history captured in picture. I believe one of them is Thomas Jefferson,third president of United States and the principal author of the declaration of independence

Visconti is releasing this pen in Sterling Silver Edition which is more common and also gold very limited edition. The details on the pen is very intricate and the workmanship is worth. In the past when talking to Dante ( believe it or not Dante has a hand in every pen made), he had mentioned that he makes one pen gives it to his staff to use it and then when they say that they feel good about that pen, then only he proceeds to make more of them with the same metrics.
