The smooth refill adds the missing ingredient and offers a pleasing writing experience.

On the counter side, the Monteverde Rodeo Drive fountain pens share an identical design with the ballpoint version, while the working mechanisms are totally poles apart. Rodeo Drive fountain pens feature a stainless steel nib, the performance of the nib is synonymous to gold-alloy nibs and almost glides throughout the entire writing process. Montegrappa extends its Fortuna series by adding a new range of writing instruments called "Caduceus". The series was introduced earlier this year and has made a robust presence in the market since the date of its inception. The name Caduceus is taken from Greek Mythology. It was the name given to the staff carried by Greek God Hermes. The mystic staff is considered as a symbol of health and purity, and still we can see it outside the gate of many health institutions. Staying true to its name, the pen reflects an impeccable sheen that would impress every pen enthusiast.

As other Fortuna writing implements, this fine collection exudes Italian pen making charisma. Caduceus pens are made from same material as other Montegrappa Fortuna writing implements. The body and cap of the pen are crafted from smooth black/white resin which is accompanied by gleaming palladium coated accents. The barrel section has no decorations; instead, it tapers down towards the rare end and displays a simple yet expressive design. But, appearance wise the "Caduceus" is a well-groomed collection of writing instruments which will surely capture your attention.

Caduceus writing implements are available in three different writing modes: fountain, rollerball, and ballpoint versions. The fountain and rollerball version feature a screw-on cap with minimum threads. The cap comes off within two or three rounds, making the Caduceus a convenient carry on-the-go companion. On the other hand side, the ballpoint pen features a smooth twist-action mechanism which eases the process of extracting and retracting the tip.

The fountain pen version features a sturdy stainless steel nib with a filigree pattern etched on the front. The pen fills via cartridge/converter, a large one, which leaves a little doubt about storage capacity. However, depending on the circumstance, do stack up and fill an ample amount of ink every time. On the counter side, the rollerball and ballpoint pens are equipped with a smooth-flowing refill that lay down smooth and clean lines on paper.

All Montegrappa Fortuna Caduceus pens have a nice heft which enhances the joy of writing and offers a sense of balance while pressing the tip against the writing surface. The resin grip section is exceptionally comfortable to hold and helps elongate the writing sessions without any fatigues. Parker Sets for all Sorts Pt.2

This is a continuation of the Parker Sets for all Sorts post. We just received some fresh stock of really cool Parker Pen sets; some including multiple pens, some including writing accessories. The one I'm writing about today is especially interesting and beautiful. 

Parker Sonnet Fountain Pen with Secret Shelf

Full disclosure -- when we received this set into the store, a few Pen Boutique employees gathered around and took turns merely opening and closing the case. This "Secret Shelf" set has a very impressive, kin-aesthetic packaging design-- when the case is opened, a small drawer is slowly emerges from the front side of the box to reveal a classic (until uncapped, that is) Sonnet fountain pen. 

The pen is the star of the show-- subtle, matte, and dark upon first glance but interesting up close. When opened, the "section" and the nib are modern with an intricate, mature, zig-zag etching on a chrome finish. It reminds me of patterned silk kerchiefs and ties from the 1920's. 

The writing experience is what you would expect from a Parker Sonnet-- a silky smooth writer with a perfectly weighted body. The feel of the matte black surface is textured and won't show fingerprints. And of course there's the classic silver Parker-arrow clip that many of our fathers wore in their shirt pockets. 

The pen comes with a taupe, letherette-covered notebook with a friction-fit belt. The notebook is about the size of a personal-sized planner that you can easily store in a bag. The first Waterman writing instrument that I got my hands on was the beautiful Waterman Perspective Blue Fountain Pen. The pen featured a contemporary design and had a gleaming appearance. However, the pen didn't compromise on quality and was the first writing tool that got me into the world of fountain pens. Since then, Waterman fountain pens have been a prominent choice for me. The latest Waterman Pen that I added into my collection is the new Waterman Hemisphere 16 Luxury Cuivre CT Fountain Pen. Though the series is available in three different models - Bronze, Saphir and Cuivre, it was the Cuivre that won my heart. 

Frankly Speaking, the pen is a total disguise. The modern technology used to design the pen completely lurks beneath the contemporary appearance of the pen. The mesmerizing appearance of this fine writer was the first factor that allured me towards the pen and compelled me to take this pen along with me. 

The pen comes in a beautiful box; inside you'll find the pen along with a cleaning cloth and a user manual. At first glance the pen looks perfect, symmetrical slim body, gleaming stainless steel cap etched with "Geographical flow of Art Deco creation" and Waterman Paris engraved trims. The pen looks astonishing and is easy to hold as well. The slim profile of the pen fits snugly between your finger tips and offers a balanced feel. The elegant design of this fine German writer is complemented by a sturdy steel nib. Though made of steel, the nib performs precisely like gold alloy nibs and is built with sturdiness that Waterman is famous for. Overall, the clever construction of the pen is remarkably admirable and strikingly gorgeous.

The Waterman Hemisphere 16 Luxury Cuivre is a cartridge/ converter pen, it takes all standard international cartridges but performs best with Waterman Ink Cartridges. If you are not into fountain pens, the series is also available in rollerball and ballpoint versions.

Perfectly balanced, elegantly designed, sturdy, the description about Waterman Hemisphere 16 Luxury Cuivre Fountain Pen can go on and on. The timeless elegance and thin price tag makes this writing instrument a premium choice for fountain pen enthusiasts and students alike. Pen Writing Fantasy: 

Early morning while walking the dogs I see the first Spring tree full of Purple Martins in Maryland. I take my beautiful Dark Lilac pen and sketch the crisp morning skyline dappled with deep purple birds.

Color:

This Dark Lilac color is absurdly captivating. With a side-eye glance the pen appears to be a normal, well-to-do pen. But when you take a good look at the Dark Lilac it's a deep, complex grape color. I've noticed this about many purple colors (i.e. my recent foray into the Caran D'Ache Ultra Violet). Due to the pebbled plastic finish the light disperses at the surface creating a silky sheen. 

The nib and clip are black-coated steel. I think this was a great choice on LAMY's part-- the color of the body is the star and the black clip and nib take back-seat. 

Lamy Safari Dark Lilac

This pen would look great inked up with:

- Diamine- Graphite

- Noodlers- Purple Martin
- Iroshizuku- Murasaki Shikibu (Beauty Berry)

Feel: 

The feel is precisely the same as the Charcoal Safari fountain pen. For those that have not used a Safari pen, I would describe it as a fairly light, ergonomic pen with a pebbled plastic feel. It feels and IS extremely sturdy. 

The feel in the hand is perfect for people (like me!) who may have slightly sweatier hands. Because of the pebbled finish the pen wont slip around when writing for long periods of time. I love how dirt and fingerprints wont show on the body of the Dark Lilac. 

It has a friction-fit cap, which is perfect for people who need to quickly jot notes. The cap will post beautifully on the back of the pen body. The clip is a black-coated, rounded, hefty wire that will slide easily onto any pant, shirt, or bag-pocket.

Writing: If you've used a Safari in the past then this is the same deal. It's a smooth writer with a large variety of nib choices. It's especially suitable for folks who like to lay down a larger line. 

It's super easy to switch out the nib if you would like to try another size. If you want to stick with the black-coated steel nib then that would limit you slightly to XF, F, M, B, and Left-y.

Perfect Writing Instruments for Kids

I was looking for a fun pen for my kids (6 and 9) to use and learn cursive with.  I decided to go with the Pelikan Pelikano and Pelikano Junior.  They really are perfect for kids, or anyone just starting with fountain pens.  They both are available in Right or Left Handed A (starter) nibs.  The Pelikano also offers a Fine or Medium version.  I like the ease of getting the pen ready to write - just a quick push and the ink cartridge popped right in.

The colors are great as well - the Pelikano is available in Green, Yellow, Red or Blue and the Junior version is Turquoise, Violet and Red.

The kids finally chose the Pelikano Junior since the ink cartridge was pirate-themed.  It's a shame that the ink cartridges are not available with different themes here in the US.  My daughter picked out the Turquoise, Violet and Pink ink cartridges and my son went for the Green, Red and Blue.

They also thought it was cool that they could put their names on the pen with an enclosed sticky white label.

I found the pens to be easy to hold and the grip section comfortable in my hands.  I was not expecting a smooth nib for the type of pen or price, but was pleasantly surprised.  The ink flow was perfect and did not clump or flow out excessively.

Now I can't wait to get home and help them learn a new way of writing.

Monteverde Jewelria fountian pen and the Ballpoint set.

For sometime the Monteverde Jewelria fountain pen has fascinated me.  The design is beautiful but the name Jewelria always threw me off thinking that it is a pen for the women. But recently I had a chance to take a second look at the pen and especially at a bargain.   The fountain pen was perfect size and had a good length.  The pen is not so large and is light.  The pen can post but thought that due to design the top might be heavy.  But that does not bother me as I usually write without posting the cap.  The pen which was picked up here is the green swirl as green is my favorite color!  I used the converter and filled up the Pelikan Adventurine Edelstein green ink and started to write on my meeting book from Rhodia ( yeah those notes!).

The nib is smooth and does write nicely.  I wrote a page in Rhodia and was ready to write even more.   I will be using this for the week and more until I guess I will find another pen which will raise interest ( should not be long).

I have the picture below and I think it is a gorgeous looking pen.  The ballpoint version which fits the  capless rollerball refill will make a good set to use it when you are on the road or need it for other purposes where you don't want to use your fountain pens.

Using a twist converter with Ink Bottle

One of the many joys of using a fine fountain pen is availability in the wide assortment of bottled ink to choose from. Whether conservative or flamboyant, there is an ink to fit every personality and your every mood. You can always dip a pen for inking, but using a pen converter provides a longer lasting ink reserve and allows your ideas to flow.  Some may be a little leery of exploring using a fountain pen converter. Here are some detailed easy instructions to take out the mystery of converters.

1.) Unscrew the neck from the pen barrel and insert the open end of the converter.
2.) Dip the pen in ink up to the hole in the nib. Be careful not to jam the nib point into the bottom of the bottle.
3.) Twist the black converter screw top clockwise three or four times to fill the ink reservoir.
4.) Ink remaining on the neck or nib should be wiped off with a clean tissue or cloth before use.

You are now ready to write!

Recording Family History

Family bibles uses expand beyond being just religious scripture document. Many have also served the purpose of providing a home for records of important events that happened such as deaths, births, graduations and weddings for centuries. Many family bibles even include traditions, recipes and family anecdotes.

Recording electronic family history may now be the norm, but hi-tech solutions are not essential. The preference for keeping detailed paper records, including handwritten biographical outlines for each ancestor, family group records and pedigree charts, in a family bible or beautifully adorned journal is once again gaining momentum.

Even though most people are completely comfortable working with a computer, there is something to be said for keeping a fine penmanship record of your ancestors’ past. You not only keep your family history alive you also contribute to preserving the keeping of private and public records using the fine art of handwriting.
