Sheaffer 300-- Heavy Pen Set for Serious Writers

Sheaffer 300 Metallic Grey Fountain and Ballpoint Set

Summary: This is a great set for people who enjoy heavy pens with classic, minimalist design. The color of the pens are unique-- a lacquered grey that borders on brown. With a metal body and chrome trim these pens feel hefty in the hand. Because of the metal lacquered body, these pens are perfect for engraving your name or company name into the cap. The spring loaded clip is perfect for wearing in the shirt or the pants pocket. The fountain pen has a wonderfully smooth stainless steel medium nib that puts down a wet line.

First Impressions: When I first got my hands on the Sheaffer 300 in Grey the first thing that caught my eye was the unusual, earthy, neutral color. I’ve never seen another pen with this color-- it’s incredibly subtle grey with brown and green undertones. Others think that the color leans more towards the purple side. The chrome trim plays well with the grey body, making the pen eye catching. Writing with this pen is a wonderful experience-- it is a Medium nib that writes consistently and with a nice wet line. It stands out as one of the nicest steel nibs I’ve used.

Performance: Right from the get go I inked this pen up with Sheaffer Skrip Blue ink and it put down a gorgeous vivid blue line on the page. I have used my fair share of steel fountain pen nibs, but this one is consistent, sturdy, and puts down the perfect sized medium line. Pairing the quality nib with the heavy body of the pen creates a writing experience that is slow and confident. My hands are particularly slow, so I found these pens to be slightly large but still comfortable and well balanced. I’ve mostly used this pen for writing notes but I did write one letter with it and particularly enjoyed the wet writing. Feedback from my coworkers and customers with larger hands say the weight and size are perfect for long writing sessions.

At work I’m on my feet a lot and prefer to clip my pens to my shirt or inside my pants pocket. Some of my beloved pens have inferior, stiff clips that require two hands to slip over the fabric. Not so with the clip on the 300. The spring loaded, wide clip on the 300 really helps for easy clipping and removal. If you’ve never used a spring loaded clip and you keep your pens in your shirt pocket, you’re missing out.

Refills:
The fountain pen comes with a Sheaffer cartridge and converter. Needless to say, the pen writes wonderfully with Sheaffer inks but you can always switch to another brand if you want to experiment with colors (imagine the J. Herbin Stormy Grey coming out of this Grey pen!).

The ballpoint takes a Sheaffer ballpoint refill which is available in blue and black. The ink flow is dark and consistent-- great for office work and writing notes. The set comes with a black ballpoint refill ready to go in the pen.

This pen set is good for:

-Folks who prefer heavier pens
-Folks who like metal pens
-People who want a beautiful engraving
-Subtle colors with earthy tones
-Smooth, medium-sized nibs
-Fountain pens that take converters
-People who clip their pens to their shirt or pants

Writer Corner

There are many ways we find to express ourselves. In this fast paced technology world there is an abundance of ways to do so. Many well-known authors from the past and present prefer the feel of a fine writing instrument in their hand while composing.

Starting with his 1994 novel “Stardust” fantasy author Neil Gaiiman first used a Waterman pen with a large notepad. He enjoyed creating with a fountain pen. He now utilizes over 60 different pens which include, Visconti, Pilot Custom 823 Amber and DeltaDylan Thomas preferred the popular Parker 51 fountain pen with its fast-drying ink. A comparable Parker pen today is the Parker 100 series. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the mastermind behind sleuth Sherlock Holmes, composed many of his works with a Parker Duofold pen. According to husband Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath constructed her writings using a Sheaffer pen.

Ink Trivia

You have more choices than you think. Blue writing ink is the most popular color used for pens. To simply say you want to use blue ink does not narrow it down as to your choice. As with many colors, blue ink is available in many shades such as Sapphire, Regency, Blue Velvet, Royal, Midnight, Imperial, Cobalt, Cerulean, Electric, Blue Suede and Mediterranean. Pen Boutique also carries many brands that offer blue including Waterman, Parker, Noodler’s Ink, Pilot-Namiki, Cross, Lamy, Diamine, Faber-Castell, Sheaffer, Montblanc and Sailor.

Question: What color helps you to remember?

Answer: You are more likely to remember something if you write it down in blue ink.

History of Demonstrator Pens: Featuring Pelikan Special Edition M805

Demonstrator pens, also known as skeleton pens, were originally furnished by manufacturers to dealers, so that the features of their products could be shown to potential buyers. Sales reps from the classic era would not have called on a customer without a couple of these demonstrators in his sample case; they would use them to show dealers the latest tricks for keeping ink inside a pen. Today, many collectors seek out these rare old demonstrators.

The first demonstrators had openings cut in their barrels, and usually, their caps. These would typically allow direct viewing of the filling mechanism and the section-inner cap junction, respectively. The first transparent demonstrator pens were probably Parker's Bakelite-barreled eyedropper-fillers, which were soon made a regular production model. Parker and Sheaffer both made fully transparent versions of their best-selling Duofold and Balance models in the early 1930s. Other demonstrators were only partially transparent, the transparency highlighting the pen's special features.

The demonstrator is still with us today, although it is no longer just a sales tool; demonstrators are offered to the buying public as "special editions" of established pen lines. For example, Aurora recently offered a completely transparent version of its venerable 88, while the translucent Pelikan 200 would also have to count as a demonstrator of sorts (although its colors are a bit too dark perhaps for true demonstrator status). Lamy also offers a demonstrator in its Vista variant of the economy-priced Safari. Omas has also offered numerous see-thru pens. There are plenty of other examples to be found among modern luxury pen manufacturers.

In recent years, transparent fountain pens have become very popular. In contrast to demonstrators past, which were made in very limited numbers and not sold to the public, these pens are regular production items, though sometimes made as limited editions. This trend may be traced back to Pelikan's transparent green M800 and transparent blue Blue Ocean M800 of 1992.

To that end, currently the most popular demonstrator brand, Pelikan, announces a new special edition, the Pelikan Souveran M805 Demonstrator Fountain Pen. Pelikan launched the Demonstrator in 2008 with transparent barrel to show how the piston mechanism works. With the huge success of the series, Pelikan re-launches the writing instrument in size 805. Featured with palladium plated trimmings and 18k gold nib covered with rhodium, the writing instrument can been held snugly in palm of hand and experience effortless writing. It is available in different nib sizes.

Calligraphy Corner

Calligraphy is the art of lettering that has existed almost as long as the written word. Calligraphy can be practiced using almost any alphabet, and thus can be found in documents from China, Japan, medieval European monks, the United States and many other places. Teaching children calligraphy can help improve penmanship and encourage creativity and attention to detail. Activities will help students practice their calligraphy regularly. These activities don't require special calligraphy tools, although calligraphy pens with slanted tips can be used.

The French believe that giving children the ability to write will free their minds to perform creatively throughout their lives. So they teach handwriting as a subject in its own right. And they teach handwriting in a uniform way throughout primary schools, using traditional calligraphy to produce a distinctive, ornate hand.

Sheaffer and Lamy both offer options to use as introductions into the world of calligraphy.

Ferrari

The famous symbol of the Ferrari race team is the Cavallino Rampante ("prancing horse") black prancing stallion on a yellow shield, usually with the letters S F (for Scuderia Ferrari), with three stripes of green, white and red (the Italian national colors) at the top. The road cars have a rectangular badge on the hood (see picture at top of page), and, optionally, the shield-shaped race logo on the sides of both front wings, close to the door.

On 17 June 1923, Enzo Ferrari won a race at the Savio track in Ravenna where he met the Countess Paolina, mother of Count Francesco Baracca, an ace of the Italian Air Force and national hero of World War I, who used to paint a horse on the side of his planes. The Countess asked Enzo to use this horse on his cars, suggesting that it would bring him good luck. The original "prancing horse" on Baracca's airplane was painted in red on a white cloud-like shape, but Ferrari chose to have the horse in black (as it had been painted as a sign of grief on Baracca's squadron planes after the pilot was killed in action) and he added a canary yellow background as this is the color of the city of Modena, his birthplace. The Ferrari horse was, from the very beginning, markedly different from the Baracca horse in most details, the most noticeable being the tail that in the original Baracca version was pointing downward. The motif of a prancing horse is old, it can be found on ancient coins. A similar black horse on a yellow shield is the Coat of Arms of the German city of Stuttgart
Sheaffer Ferrari offers a variety of affordable pens sporting the Ferrari logo and they are a distinctive way to celebrate the brand.

Sheaffer 300 Fountain Pen and Rollerball Sets for the holidays with extra holiday gift box

Sheaffer Fountain and Rollerball set for $75 ( Retail for $150)

Sheaffer Fountain and Rollerball set
Sheaffer Fountain and Rollerball set

We have created a unique Sheaffer fountain pen androllerball set for the holiday.  We chose the Sheaffer 300 which has a nice width and a good balance with a wonderful writing quality.  The color we chose was the red ( like a marble finish) which will symbolize with the joyous holiday occasions.

PACKAGING:
The packaging of the  pen comes with a Sheaffer black box with Sheaffer dot logo.  It has the Fountain pen, rollerball pen, 2 cartridges ( one black and one blue ) and one rollerball refill which is black in color.  The fountain pen does come with the converter ( Sheaffer) and you do not have to buy another one.

SHEAFFER ROLLERBALL PEN:
The rollerball pen has a nice balanced weight on it and has a chrome plated steel cap.  The pen is a snap cap and has black refill in it.  It takes only Sheaffer rollerball refill and the Sheaffer rollerballs write so smooth.

Pleasure of writing with Sheaffer Pens

The writings as shown in the picture do write smooth and on Rhodia meeting book that we used, it was a pleasure to write.  It will make you feel like taking some notes in the meeting ( don’t know if it is going be meaningful  but these notes might come handy some day!).

SHEAFFER FOUNTAIN PEN:

Sheaffer Fountain Pen
Sheaffer Fountain Pen

The fountain pen is an identical twin to the rollerball pen.  The Nib is a standard Sheaffer like nib – stainless steel with Iridium nib.  Sheaffer steel nibs are sturdy and not flexible. The nib does write smoothly even for a fine point filled with the Pelikan Edelstein Green Adventura ink . For our test we used the fine point.

Sheaffer Pen
Sheaffer 300 pen set with Pelikan EdelsteinGreen Adventura ink

The writing is surprisingly smooth even for a fine point.  The fountain pen comes with a converter and can use cartridge also.  Converter is included in the box and also a blue and a black ink cartridge.   The cap is a snap type cap and snaps in and out nicely with a click.  The clip is a nice big clip and has a sheaffer dot on it.   Many of our customers have expressed their love for the clip.

CONCLUSION:
The final conclusion is that these are a great every day pen.  You can use the rollerball to note down quick notes and then alternate with the fountain pen to cherish your writings or flow your ideas on to the paper.  Either way these are great pens and value for the money . The 50% off sale is icing on the cake.  These pens are  no longer be produced from Sheaffer and hence our idea of making a set !!!

Sheaffer Taranis Fountain Pen Review

Sheaffer Taranis Fountain Pen
Sheaffer Taranis Fountain Pen
Most recognizable by the signature white dot which adorns the clip, Sheaffer has long been a respected name in the world of pens.  Sheaffer collaborated with famed US architect Charles Debbas to bring us the Taranis line of pens.  Debbas has taken his characteristic feature – minimalism – and melded it into this line.  The overall shape and design of the fountain pen when capped is the definition of minimal, with a rounded middle slowly shifting to squared ends on either side.  The clip is rectangular and fits nicely with the aesthetics of the body.  Uncapped, the user is greeted with a front section adorned with the Sheaffer name (hidden when capped, no doubt to keep in the vein of the minimalist aesthetics) and a hooded nib, which helps keep a tidy and simple appearance.  The fountain pens are compatible with Sheaffer converters and Skrip cartridges, both of which are included with the pen.  The Taranis line is also available in Rollerball or Ballpoint, and in five different colors – Stormy Night (black), Icy Gunmetal (grey) or Sleek Chrome (silver) with chrome trim, and White Lightning (white) or Stormy Wine (burgundy) with gold trim.

The Sheaffer Taranis fountain pen is well balanced, and it felt most comfortable while using it posted.  The nib is smooth – it reminds me of a Pilot/Namiki Vanishing Point both in feel and looks.  If I were to nitpick, it does seem to be a little on the wet side with a Medium nib though nothing that would keep me from using it as a daily writer.  The front section where the Sheaffer name is present is flat and I found it to be a good resting place for my pointer finger while in use.  It is nice that a converter is included, as not all fountain pens come with one, especially as it is proprietary to Sheaffer pens.  This is my go-to suggestion when someone is looking for an affordable pen as it blends great writing performance with modern styling.

While it is aesthetically an unassuming pen, the Sheaffer Taranis is one of the smoothest writers I have used.  If you are looking for an understated daily pen with a fantastic nib, the Taranis is hard to beat.

Let the season begin….

If there is one thing Americans are relatively modest about, it’s our sports teams. The Olympics, for example, are always a popular, but never fanatical, success. We go, we cheer passionately, we make sure we come home with the most medals (or at the very least more than China), we produce a few athletic starlets, and then we come home, safe and secure in our international athletic dominance. This of course isn’t to say that we aren’t fiercely proud of our athletes and the years of hard work and dedication they put toward their sports. The Fab Five are certified angels, our women’s soccer have won hearts on and off the field, our basketball boys have continued resoundingly demolishing the international competition and at the end of the day none of us are complaining. It’s just that, on a whole, compared to our northern neighbor’s borderline terrifying pride in their hockey teams, our transatlantic friends’ unfathomable loyalty to their soccer teams, and our southern neighbors’ who have actually started wars over the aforementioned sport, Americans enjoy a successful, but comparatively subdued feeling towards our teams.
Football is the exception.
The Canadian riots that take place at the conclusion of every Stanley Cup and the Brit’s unfailing loyalty to their soccer teams that, well, aren’t that good, all utterly pale in comparison to violent and undying allegiance Americans have toward their football teams. The dedicators typically fall into one of three categories: the casual but loyal fan, the fan who has made football a certified study and knows the statistics and trade history of every NFL player of importance, and the ‘die-hard heaven forbid you ever utter a single derogatory statement about their favorite team lest you risk having your lights punched out’ fan. (No exaggeration, I’ve actually seen grown adults get into physical altercations inside their place of business over football teams.) It doesn’t even matter how good or bad the team is – they can be the absolute worst team in the entire league – but if you get on the wrong side of a die-hard fan, you should never expect anything less than getting the stuffing beaten out of you in the dead of night and your car getting totaled via sledgehammer. (You think I’m joking? I assure you, my metaphors are quite tame compared to what actually happen to some poor unfortunate souls.) Believe you me, the shenanigans that goes on during Eastern European soccer matches is child’s play to veteran football fans, and from what I’ve seen in the news recently, that’s saying something.
September 5th officially started this year’s football season, and the whole shebang won’t be over until February 3, 2013 with Super Bowl XLVII (47). Since we’re in the very beginning of the regular season, that coveted cup is up for grabs and it’s literally anyone’s game at this point (depending on who you ask). With all these new hopefuls arriving on the field this season, it’s only reasonable that you add a whole new lineup to your writing repertoire. The first player on the green is the Lamy 2000 Brushed Stainless Steel Fountain Pen. A staggering amount of manufacturing skills and precision levels were required to create this timeless design using only one material: stainless steel. After extensive processing and designing, the Lamy 2000’s finished product possesses a high-end, velvet, matt brushed body. Its seamless, partially hand-finished surface is shaped to provide the optimum in form and function. For those of you who want a little more color, Sheaffer and Scuderia Ferrari are proud to present the Sheaffer Ferrari 100 Rollerball Pen. Its sleek, bold design features either a fire red or midnight black body with silver-colored rings and accents. At the highest level of quality, each pen proudly displays the Ferrari emblem upon the cap and the renowned “White Dot” of excellence on the clip. Each instrument reflects the same profound passion, extraordinary talent and incredible expertise that drives the Ferrari company. (I will refrain from making an awful pun.) The last, but most certainly not least, player up for grabs is the Monteverde Poquito Stylus XL Ballpoint Pen. This pen has been redesigned with a consideration for convenience, practicability and stylish new colors. The soft rubber stylus is as responsive as fingers on a touch screen, but offers better accuracy and leaves no fingerprints. The piece is compatible with smart phones, tables, GPS, E-readers as well as public ATMS and airport kiosks. With colors ranging from Graphie Grey to violet to turquoise, this is a universal gift that any techie would love to have.
Whether it’s the aforementioned gems or one of the many others who have just arrived from the factory, you need to make sure you’re looking sharp this season. Your favorite teams certainly are, and how would it look if you didn’t represent them accordingly? So get your pens, get your jersey, get your giant foam finger, and get yourself to a TV, ‘cause this thing only comes once a year and it’s something you certainly don’t want to miss.
