History of Demonstrator Pens: Featuring Pelikan Special Edition M805

Demonstrator pens, also known as skeleton pens, were originally furnished by manufacturers to dealers, so that the features of their products could be shown to potential buyers. Sales reps from the classic era would not have called on a customer without a couple of these demonstrators in his sample case; they would use them to show dealers the latest tricks for keeping ink inside a pen. Today, many collectors seek out these rare old demonstrators.

The first demonstrators had openings cut in their barrels, and usually, their caps. These would typically allow direct viewing of the filling mechanism and the section-inner cap junction, respectively. The first transparent demonstrator pens were probably Parker's Bakelite-barreled eyedropper-fillers, which were soon made a regular production model. Parker and Sheaffer both made fully transparent versions of their best-selling Duofold and Balance models in the early 1930s. Other demonstrators were only partially transparent, the transparency highlighting the pen's special features.

The demonstrator is still with us today, although it is no longer just a sales tool; demonstrators are offered to the buying public as "special editions" of established pen lines. For example, Aurora recently offered a completely transparent version of its venerable 88, while the translucent Pelikan 200 would also have to count as a demonstrator of sorts (although its colors are a bit too dark perhaps for true demonstrator status). Lamy also offers a demonstrator in its Vista variant of the economy-priced Safari. Omas has also offered numerous see-thru pens. There are plenty of other examples to be found among modern luxury pen manufacturers.

In recent years, transparent fountain pens have become very popular. In contrast to demonstrators past, which were made in very limited numbers and not sold to the public, these pens are regular production items, though sometimes made as limited editions. This trend may be traced back to Pelikan's transparent green M800 and transparent blue Blue Ocean M800 of 1992.

To that end, currently the most popular demonstrator brand, Pelikan, announces a new special edition, the Pelikan Souveran M805 Demonstrator Fountain Pen. Pelikan launched the Demonstrator in 2008 with transparent barrel to show how the piston mechanism works. With the huge success of the series, Pelikan re-launches the writing instrument in size 805. Featured with palladium plated trimmings and 18k gold nib covered with rhodium, the writing instrument can been held snugly in palm of hand and experience effortless writing. It is available in different nib sizes.

Pen Trivia - Left Handed Writers and Nibs

Bias against left-handed people is discrimination, conscious or not, against people who are left-handed dominant. Approximately 10% of the world's population is left-handed. Yet many common tools are designed solely for use by right-handed people, making them difficult, painful, or unsafe for left-handed people to use. These range from simple objects such as scissors to dangerous machinery such as power saws. Even in relatively "modern" societies, left-handed people historically have been—and in some places still are—forced from childhood to use their right hands for tasks which they would naturally perform with the left, such as eating and writing.

Left-handed people who speak Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, or any other right-to-left script do not have the same difficulties with writing. The right-to-left nature of these languages prevents left-handers from running their hand on the ink as happens with left-to-right languages. Because writing when moving one's hand away from its side of the body can cause smudging if the outward side of the hand is allowed to drag across the writing, it is considered easier to write the Latin alphabet with the right hand than with the left. Furthermore, it is considered more difficult to write legible Chinese characters the left hand than it is to write Latin letters, though difficulty is subjective and depends on the person in question.

Left-to-right alphabets can be written smudge-free and in proper "forward slant" with the left hand if the paper is turned 1/4 turn clockwise (90 degrees to the right), and the left hand is drawn toward the body on forward strokes, and left to right on upward strokes (as expressed in directionality of the text). It is also possible to do calligraphy in this posture with the left hand, but using right-handed pen nibs. Otherwise, left-handed pen nibs are required in order to get the thick-to-thin stroke shapes correct for most type faces.

Luckily Pelikan and Lamy offer left-hand fountain pen nibs for the left-handed writer.

Question: When was the first pen nib invented?

Answer: The first pens were reeds, bamboo, and bird feathers (quills), and quills were used extensively from the 5th through the 1st century BC, notably for the Dead Sea scrolls. By 79 AD, Romans were using metal-nib pens dipped in ink.

Pelikan M101N Tortoise Fountain Pen Review

Pelikan Souverän M101N Tortoisehell Red Fountain Pen
Pelikan Souverän M101N Tortoisehell Red Fountain Pen

For the collectors amongst us, Pelikan began issuing the Special Edition M101N series as a throw-back to a line that was originally introduced in 1937.  Now in its third Special Edition iteration, the Pelikan Souverän M101N Tortoisehell Red is the latest version to come out of Germany.  These Special Edition pens pay homage to the lines and shape of the original piece while utilizing the best in modern technology and materials.  The body itself is made of cellulose acetate and has a somewhat striated design with differing shades of brown inlaid on an almost creamy parchment brown.  The cap, front section and rear section are a red resin and help to set the piece apart from the more subdued colors of the other two Special Editions.  The nib is 14k gold and, like their other pieces, is easily removed for cleaning/swapping/etc.  However, these nibs do have a vintage looking engraving which sets them apart from normal Pelikan nibs.  The pen is piston filled and for a limited time will have a bottle of Pelikan 4001 Blue ink included.  There will be historic font lettering on the bottle and presentation box.

In a collection that spans up to the extra large M1000, the M101 line is Pelikan’s smallest offering.  It is a handy pen, something that could easily be put into a shirt pocket or bag and be available at a moment’s notice.  It is also a light pen, mainly due to the materials from which it is manufactured, so it shouldn’t be a burden when carried.  The large ink reservoir window aids in keeping track of your ink supply and the 14k gold nib ensures a smooth ink-to-paper writing experience.  The removable nib helps to make certain that you have a completely clean pen when changing inks, something which will be of great value to those who like to change or experiment with different colors.  I found that holding the pen was comfortable with the cap either posted or completely off.  While the pen is shorter than most, I did not find its size to be a detriment to its use.

The M101N Special Edition Tortoiseshell Red fountain pen is a good addition to Pelikan’s growing stable of fine writing instruments.  It has taken a proven historic design and updated it for today’s demanding users.  For those that like a vintage look with the added benefit of modern manufacturing or are just looking for a great writing pen, the Pelikan M101N Special Edition Tortoiseshell Red fountain pen should be high on your list of pieces to check out.  Make sure to act fast as the special Blue ink bottle is only available for a limited time!

Pelikan Edelstein Fountain Pen Ink Bottle

Seven vibrant colors from Pelikan named Edelstein is now in stock here at Pen Boutique stores/warehouse to be shipped out and tried by the pen/ink lovers all around the world. The word about this ink bottles is out since mid of 2009 and stocks are depleting fast enough as there was many preorders for this ink bottle.

At the first glance it looked like we are getting about 30ml of ink in the bottle, but wait the bottle says 50ml. It looks like the ink is stuck on the ceiling of the ink bottle .The glass is an absolute beauty and the base of the glass is spread across giving it the extra curve to hold more ink.The bottle is called ‘flacon’ .Bottle is pretty heavy and the ink along with bottle weighs 9.6 ounces. The ink is Made in Germany and Pelikan calls it the Extra Soft Ink.

Now an ink like this is definitely worth trying. So I filled my Pelikan M215 Fountain Pen with one of the colors ,every color looked good,so I selected a random color JADE(sounded like a pretty nice name). The writing was pretty smooth and I felt that ink was drying at a pretty decent pace. The color of the ink was elegant soft green and the ink never skipped while writing. Need to try another color (guessing Mandarin as its close to the Rhodia note pad that I use everyday as my mouse pad)

It is definitely worth to have each color in your collection. Each bottle costs 20 dollar and there are 7 colors with a gemstone theme: Ruby, Mandarin, Aventurin, Jade, Topaz, Sapphire, and Onyx.Edelstein is the German word for ‘gemstone’ . The Edelstein collection has stirred a lot of interest among the pen lovers as it has been quite sometime that an company has released fancy ink bottle.Well, guess the wait is worth it.But only time will tell whether it has been accepted by ink lovers across the globe.Waiting for comments from users.

Pelikan Souveran M600 Fountain Pen

Pelikan Souveran M600 Fountan Pen
Pelikan Souveran M600 Fountain Pen

Pelikan has been manufacturing fountain pens for 85 years, and their experience shows in the Souveran M600 fountain pen.  I acquired the black with blue stripe model in the photo several years ago, and it quickly became one of my favorites.  The medium sized body and overall balance are great, the gold plated rings are very attractive, and the brass piston filling mechanism is a real pleasure to use.  Probably the best feature is the two-tone 14 carat gold nib decorated with rhodium, which writes so very smoothly, even in fine or extra fine (mine happens to be a fine, and medium or broad nibs are also available).

I've used this pen to send notes to friends as well as to address birthday and holiday cards.  Quite frequently people comment on seeing that I used a fountain pen, and they really appreciate the personal gesture in this world of fast-paced digital communication.  If you'd like to experience the pleasure of writing with a quality fountain pen with a solid gold nib (in my mind, there is no substitute), you can't do much better than the Pelikan Souveran M600.  Choose from a model in all-black, or black with red, blue, or traditional green stripe, and try some of the very colorful Pelikan and Edelstein inks as well.  You won't be disappointed.

Saint Patrick’s Day

Let’s paint the town green!

Saint Patrick's Day

Looks like, it’s the shared thought on everyone’s mind right now. With the arrival of 17th March this year, everyone is dusting off their green hats and either washing the old or purchasing a new green T-shirt. Legends have it that the color green makes a person invisible to leprechauns (elves) that will pinch someone if they see them. Save yourselves from the pinch, get your guards of green on; it’s Saint Patrick’s Day!

Along with the New York skyline above the empire state building, Sydney Opera House is lit green. Niagara Falls is flowing green and so is Chicago river plus the fountain of White house. London Eye, Tokyo Tower, Burj-al-Arab, all of them will go through the transformation that later erupts with Ireland’s shade of Green. This vibrancy of green will sweep through Italy, Australia, Canada, South Korea, Switzerland, USA and many other countries around the globe. You might want to follow the trend and get something green before you get pinched.

Why not modify the trend in a tasteful way? T-shirts and hats are done with; go for something that’s innovative, original and of course, limited.

Retro51 is never out of Fashion and neither is Retro51 LTD Green Acrylic Cellulose Double - Eight Tornado Fountain Pen MEDIUM POINT.

Aurora Ipsilon
Aurora Ipsilon
One of the reasons people wear green on St. Patrick’s day is because the catholic side of Ireland is branded with this energetic color. Science says, energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can always be transformed. Energy flows and I wouldn’t be off beam if I patronize Aurora Ipsilon Green Resin Fountain Pen which has the vigor to be the everyday pal for someone who studies as well as the untiring friend for someone who works. Available in various sizes, Aurora Ipsilon Green Resin Fountain Pen boasts of Green resin barrel, black lacquer ring, gold plated trims, light weight and great balance. The oomph can be sculpted according to your personality. Try evenly full of verve, Aurora Ipsilon Green Resin Rollerball Pen or Aurora Ipsilon Green Resin Ballpoint Pen, and see if you can resist the zest.

Though we talk of green much, the holiday was originally associated with the color blue. It’s believed that the change of color happened because of Ireland’s nickname ‘The Emerald Isle’.

Pelikan Edelstein Ink
Pelikan Edelstein Ink
Talking of emeralds, did you know there has been an addition of a new range of garnet, sapphire, ruby and most outstandingly, aventurine in the treasure of compassion for smooth writing and fountain pens? The collection of brilliant nine colors inspired from gemstones structure Pelikan Edelstein 50ml Fountain Pen Ink Bottle. It’s no less than an impeccable jewelry. It’s of high value, it’s prosperous, detailed, perfect gift for yourself and the significant individuals in your life; and not to forget, and it’s limited to one year only. However, there are doubts Pelikan Edelstein 50ml Fountain Pen Ink Bottle Aventurine Green will last a year, especially when 17th March is just around the corner.

Visconti Dali Inspired Surrealist Fountain Pen
Visconti Dali Inspired Surrealist Fountain Pen

St. Patrick is a Catholic saint credited with enriching the island with Christianity and most famous for driving the snakes away from Ireland. True Fact: There are no snakes in Ireland. March 17th; a public holiday in Ireland is also well-known as a traditional day for spiritual renewal. Tradition, mind, imagination-all these words trigger the image of Visconti Dali Inspired Surrealist Fountain Pen in my vision. Dalí was well known for his uniqueness, creativity, and his exceptional character was the blend of respect for tradition and a determination for continuity. The eighteen–faceted design of Visconti Dali Inspired Surrealist Fountain Pen with gold and silver trim marks respect to all the traditions worldwide.

Bring in anything Irish, greens, shamrocks and lucky clovers but St. Patrick’s Day’s celebration is absolutely incomplete without the parades, festivities and Céilithe, a type of social gathering. With a superior population of Irish in USA than in Ireland itself, The New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade is the largest parade in the world. Likewise, the world's shortest St. Patrick's Day parade is held in the Irish village of Dripsey that lasts only 100 yards.

It’s also said that finding a four-leafed clover on this very day is extraordinarily lucky. Any luck so far?

May I also ask you how do you plan to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year? What do you have in mind? Something GREEN probably!

When time passes by...

Pen Boutique

Pen Boutique been online for 5 years and all these years we grew by learning from others. We looked upon others to learn how they do things. The dealers in writing instruments have experience of decades and we were a child in this whole scenario. We started when the recession was over and just with a hope that our passion can help us to channel our energy where our heart lies - Fine pens.

We were only thinking that we will have something very nice and small and help the niche customers.

"There were no big ambitions, just try to do something.. something with our lives to make it more meaningful..."

We were ready to put our hearts in customer service and make it the priority. What we did not expect was that there would be so much love from customers that we kept on growing at rapid pace. We never know how time files.. We were chugging through the recession and today we are one of the largest dealers of fine pens in US. We are one of the top dealers of Montblanc Pens , waterman pens, Faber castell pens , Pelikan pens. In between we opened up another store, also expanded our online operations.

The success can attributed only because of the love of the customers. We are blessed with one of the finest customer base. We recently sent out a survey to our customers hoping that there will be some reply and we can work on it to improvise. What we did not expect was an overwhelming response as to what we can do to make things even better. We have noted every one of your comments and we will try to implement them.

We always wanted to write a blog, express ourselves but in between our work and sleep we never had time :-) Hopefully, we will have a continuation this time and hoping that we will be able to communicate even better with our customers.

Thank you all for the wonderful support. Writing makes one remember things. When I used to be in college, the professor used to say that while reading if you want to remember the points to write, first read the book, understand it and then write it. If you are able to write all the points without seeing the book, you have understood it. Otherwise, you need to go back and start reading until you can write without seeing the text in the book.

It is been a wonderful journey so far and we are hoping that we can serve our customers even better.

Thank you,
